A meta title tag can be defined as an HTML code that determines the title of a web page. These title tags are shown on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) of a search engine as clickable blue or dark blue links.The title tag represents an accurate summary of the data that the homepage addresses.

There is no character limit of meta titles in Google search engine but the search engine only displays 50-60 characters of the overall title on a SERP. It is therefore recommended to keep your title tag character limit concise or else they will be cut by the search engines.

Why are title tags important?

It was long believed that title tags were responsible for making a web page rank higher on a SERP. But Google enunciated this claim to be false in 2007. Since title tags are not obliged to be considered as one of the ranking factors on Google, their job includes doing SEO indirectly on three key places:

  1. Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs)
    Since title tags are the primary determinants of what the visitors look at, they play a major role in regulating organic traffic of a web page. They become the first instance of a user experience that your site provides.

How To Write A Good Title Tag

A good title tag is what attracts the most visitors through its word appeal. It also becomes a very good SEO strategy for the web page. It might seem that writing a good title tag is an onerous task, but it isn’t. So, here are a few ways to bless your title tag with effectiveness:

  1. Optimize Your Title Tag’s Character Length
    It has been mentioned before that Google search engine hides characters of a title tag when its limit reaches above 50-60. It is therefore recommended to polish and shorten your title tag’s character length to allow the search engine to show the whole of the title tag on a SERP. It is to be kept in mind before writing a title tag that some letters such as “Q” or “W” take up more space than other letters such as “I” or “L”. This is to be considered as an essential part of writing a title tag.
    Similarly, writing all the characters in CAPS will exhaust your title tag’s visibility space faster than writing them all in lowercase. A piece of advice for writing title tag would be to only write the first letter of a word in CAPS while keeping the rest in lowercase. However, there is no need to do this while writing compound words and other short words such as “and”, “by”, etc. Sometimes a need might appear to employ longer titles for your title tag. Under these circumstances, you need to think like a visitor and make a judgement.
  2. Don’t Overstuff Keywords To Do SEO
    Keywords are important alright, not just for your content but also for the welfare of your title tag. But overdoing SEO keywords might backfire. There is no punishment for long titles but overstuffing your title with keywords escalates bad experience for the user. Using titles that are keyword calendars or uses the keywords repeatedly can get you in trouble with the search engine. Search engines can read keyword use in title and takes necessary actions against you in order to decrease bad user experience.
  3. Important Keywords First
    When the title tag begins with a keyword or has a keyword within the beginning radius of the title tag, the rank of that home page will have chances of getting improved. This is why it is recommended to write the name of the product or service first rather than the brand name.   4. Keep Your Title Unique
    Titles that are unique in formation or wording motivates a user to visit the web page. Since title tag represents the gist of what the web page has to offer, a unique title tag pushes a user to believe that the content of the web page is unique and informative too. It also helps the search engine to believe that your content is good and relevant to the keyword searched.
    It might seem that creating a unique title tag is difficult since hundreds or thousands of same titles already exist that provides the same product or service, but modern CMS system and code-based templates allow you to create unique titles tag for your home page. Why Google Won’t Display My Title Tag In SERPs?

It might happen sometimes that you’ll do every SEO activity to make your web page rank, but Google just ignores your web page and doesn’t rank it. Your title tag could be the problem. Following are the reasons why:
  1. Keyword-Stuffed Title
    As discussed above, a keyword-stuffed title tag might backfire to your SEO strategy and force the search engine to neglect your web page. So, try to keep the keyword flow regulated in your title tag.
  2. Your Title Is Not Compatible With The Query Your title could be rewritten by the search engine if it does not match the query. This is not a bad thing, since your web page is being included in the SERP
